Brussels’ port is Belgium's second-largest inland port and a hive of activity. More than 9000 people are employed in 300 companies along the 8-kilometre industrial and maritime quays.

Thanks to this pioneer in the circular and sustainable economy, there are almost 2000 less lorries on the road each day, and the capital can breathe more easily.

The trimodal terminal (serving water, rail and road) just keeps on growing. As well as offering modern and efficient equipment, it also provides a regular river shuttle to Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Harbour Master’s Office

The Harbour Master’s Office or ‘Capitainerie’ is the Port’s operational centre and home to the Permanent Surveillance Centre, which takes care of security in the port area, in particular with the many cameras spread over the sites and patrolling stewards. It is also from the Capitainerie that the canal's maintenance boats are controlled and that the various interventions on the waterway are piloted. The various artistic structures at the Port of Brussels are also the responsibility of the Capitainerie.

Vergote Basin
Port area

The Vergote basin was created as part of the relocation of the Willebroeck Canal to the west, in order to connect it in a straight line to the Charleroi Canal. Nowadays, it is used mainly to transport building materials and for recycling ferrous materials. A large sports complex should soon emerge on its banks.

This office building with a red brick façade, enhanced with blue stone, was designed for the Brussels Canal and Maritime installations corporation in 1937-1938. A very fine example of Art Deco architecture, the headquarters of the Port of Brussels is a listed building, in a beautiful location in front of Tour & Taxis.

Biestebroeck Basin
Port area

A revival is underway at Biestebroeck Basin. Just in case there weren’t already enough projects at the Port, there are also plans for the land nearby, beyond the domain: housing, schools, shops… and plenty of public green spaces. The Brussels Beer Project brewery has recently moved into a beautiful brand-new building on land granted by the Port of Brussels.

As the eleventh lock on the journey from Charleroi, the large Molenbeek Lock was completed in 1938. It receives about 80 boats each day and has a capacity of almost 40,000 m3. Its facilities provide room to store spare equipment. In addition, the lock enhances the perception of the port.
