Our team

With its companies, its container terminal, which will triple its capacity, its boats, but also its banks, its bridges, its locks, its skate park (Sk8Port), its kilometres of walks and quays, the Port is truly a beating heart in the city! But it would be nothing without the teams, the women and men who manage it and bring it to life. The Port of Brussels employs 140 people who keep the machinery on the river running every day.

équipe du port

In concrete terms, the Port's organisation is structured around three major divisions:

General Management

The Port of Brussels management division leads the teams which define the overall vision and oversee the implementation of the management contract. The General Secretariat supports this activity energetically by processing files and preparing projects in close collaboration with the management bodies and the government. This division is also responsible for monitoring the management contract between the Brussels-Capital Region and the Port.

Under its leadership, the Communications department is dedicated to the brand image of the Port. Managing everything from external and internal communications, to events and press relations, this team coordinates major initiatives such as the Port Festival. A Community manager runs the online presence for the company, while the Team manager sets objectives and the communications officer develops the external strategy. The internal Communications manager focuses on internal strategy. We also take care to encourage interaction with the public and visits, particularly from schools. In short, a pivotal team which is actively shaping and developing the Port of Brussels. Finally, our translation service handles the translation and proofreading of a wide range of documents in order to meet the linguistic requirements of a Brussels-based public institution.

Management control ensures that operations are kept under control, that objectives are met and that regulations are observed.  The team provides expertise in the areas of internal control, commitment and settlement control, management control, information management, reporting and personal data protection.  As for the IT team, it controls and supervises existing and future IT solutions. It develops the global IT strategy, and monitors IT projects.

The Prevention consultant is responsible for proposing strategies for preventing occupational hazards and improving working conditions, and monitoring their implementation at the Port.

Development and infrastructure department

This department is split into two branches:

The Port development department, which plays a crucial role in marketing the port area, offering warehousing space to transport companies and developing industrial land along the canal for companies dependent on water-borne transport. In addition to stimulating economic activity and employment, the Port division cluster contributes financially to the development of the Port, which uses its commercial revenues for financing expansion and modernisation projects. This department focuses on carrying out new projects, welcoming new customers, promoting innovation for sustainable transport, and managing requests for existing customers. Finally, the Strategy division is responsible for building the Port of tomorrow, by preparing development studies, monitoring statistics, developing a land strategy, and managing acquisitions, tariff regulations and urban planning dossiers.

The Technical department, for its part, carries out a whole range of tasks which can be divided into two parts: firstly the Infrastructure division and secondly the Maintenance division. These divisions are responsible for managing the buildings, roads, waterways and the engineering structures located in the port area.

The Infrastructure division is responsible for the design and implementation ofrenovation, modernisation and extension projects for port buildings and structures (quays, bridges, locks, etc.).

The Maintenance division is responsible for the design and the implementation of electromechanical projects, but also operates in the field, carrying out various maintenance and repair tasks.

The Environment division informs, advises and supports the private and public players working in the port area, the port cluster and the canal. This division collaborates upon a large number of theme-based working groups set up by the various regional organisations in Brussels. Its remit covers all the aspects of the environment and the climate. This is reflected in legislative and regulatory supervision which ensures that the Port has the most appropriate information regarding environmental obligations, not only for itself, but also for concession-holding companies. Moreover it provides concession holders with information and advice regarding the incentives, subsidies, support services and advice available in the Brussels Region. The division also ensures proactive communication of the objectives and actions carried out by the Port and in the port area in terms of sustainability. It is also responsible for developing and monitoring environmental studies and projects in the fields of water, energy, waste, polluted soil and biodiversity, within the port area.

A head of department is currently being recruited.

Support department and Harbourmaster's Office

At the Port, this is in many respects also a major, cross-functional service.

The Human Resources department manages human resources and staff training programmes, and ensures staff development and their well-being.

The Legal department handles the litigation and other legal issues relating to the contracts with the Port's client companies. In addition to its role of defending the Port's interests, this department is also called upon to issue legal opinions. It also handles all "small claims" such as accidents on the property of the Port of Brussels, rubbish dumping, fire or theft or attempted theft from customers of the Port of Brussels.

The Harbour Master's Office includes the administrative offices of the Operations department, the Port's crisis centre (in the event of the PIU - the Internal Emergency Plan - being triggered), as well as the control resources relating to the activities on the waterway and the dissemination of information to users. It also houses the collection services for the "sea boats" and manages the canal in coordination with the other regions.
The Harbour Master's Office also manages the engineering structures: the two Brussels locks and the two movable bridges.

The Finance department is responsible for accounting and budgetary decisions and operations. It supervises rigorously the accounts receivable and payable, ensuring the transparent and efficient management of financial transactions. Keeping a close eye at all times on cash flow is crucial to anticipating any payment deadlines and avoiding any overdrafts, thereby ensuring stable financial health. Our commitment to proactive financial management is reflected in the meticulous preparation of budgets and the careful monitoring of their execution. Finally, by providing profitability and financial risk simulations, this department offers invaluable expertise in order to influence the decision-making process for any major investment projects.
